What to do when you suddenly can't boot into Windows Vista

Q:  My Sahara Slate PC suddenly won't boot up into Windows Vista properly. It has been working fine up until this happened. How can I fix this?

A:   This often can happen after installing a new OS update, application or driver that is corrupt or just doesn't play well with your existing configuration.

To get around this problem, Windows Vista has a built-in back-up system that will allow you to restore your computer back to a previous point in time. This restore procedure will not effect any of your documents or e-mail, only your system's configuration.

Here's what to do:

  1. To be safe, plug your tablet into its external power supply. If the retore procedure is interrupted it could corrupt your system.
  2. Plug in an external USB DVD drive, USB mouse, and a USB keyboard into the tablet (a USB hub to connect all three devices, if you don't have a hub, you can swap the mouse for the keyboard after choosing to boot from the DVD drive in step 7 below).
  3. Power on the DVD drive and insert the Windows Vista Installation DVD, not the System Restore DVD.
  4. Power on your tablet and enter the BIOS by pressing the [Delete] key repaetedly until the BIOS screen appears. Sahara Slate PC i400 series owners can more easily do this by pressing the "Rotate Screen" function button located on the face of their tablets to the left of screen as soon as the TabletKiosk logo appears on the screen.
  5. Navigate to the "Boot" menu and select the USB DVD drive as the first boot device.
  6. Hit [F10] to save the changes and reboot.
  7. Immediately after the TabletKiosk logo screen disappears, a message appears asking you to hit any key on the keyboard to boot from the DVD. Hit any key to boot from the DVD. (Note: Users without a USB hub can swap the mouse for the keyboard after hitting the key to boot from the DVD.)
  8. Your tablet should boot to the initial Windows Vista installation screen. Click the "Next" button, using the mouse, to accept the language settings and proceed.
  9. In the lower left hand corner of the screen that appears, click on "Repair your computer". DO NOT click on "Install now" unless you have decided you want to reinstall Windows.
  10. Click the "Next >" button to accept the installation on your internal drive and proceed.
  11. From the "System Recovery Options" screen, click on "System Restore".
  12. After a few moments, a screen explaining about system restore will appear. Click "Next >" to continue to the "System Restore" screen. Choose a restore point from a previous time you knew your system was functioning properly. The most recent restore point in the list should be sufficient. Click the "Next >" button to continue with the restore. DO NOT attempt to restart or interfere until the restore completes or you can completely corrupt your Windows installation to the point that only a clean reinstall with fix it. Be patient as this procedure can take a few minutes. (NOTE: This restore procedure will NOT affect any documents you have created or edited since the time of the restore point, only application installations, driver installations and other system configuration changes are affected.)
  13. When completed, restart the tablet and again choose to enter the BIOS and change the 1st boot device back to your internal HDD (following essentially the same procedure as described above in steps 5 - 7).
  14. Your system should now successfully boot into Windows Vista normally and inform you that the restore procedure was successful.

If your system still won't boot up properly, repeat the steps above, only choosing an older restore point. If you run out of restore points, you may have something more seriously wrong with your system that may require a complete Windows reinstall using your System Restore Disc, or even a hardware repair.

Q:  What is the difference betweenthe i412T and i440T and the i440D?

Q:  When connected to the VESA mounting plate, the Sahara Slate PC’s audio no longer seems to function. Is there something wrong with my Tablet PC or VESA plate?

A:   Due to the way the VESA mounting plate functions, the internal speakers are disabled. There is, however, an audio jack incorporated into the VESA plate that will allow powered, external speakers to be connected.

    eo UMPC End-User Upgradeability

Q:  Can I upgrade my eo UMPC myself without voiding the warranty?

A:   Due to the ultra compact nature of the UMPC specification, extensive design considerations made it impossible to supply a configuration that allows for convenient, user access to RAM or the hard drive. The entire casing of the machine must be disassembled to access those components, exposing leads, power and circuitry that if damaged would leave the eo in an unusable state.

We therefore do not support end user upgrades to these units and attempting to do so will void the eo's warranty.

Touch screen stops responding on eo UMPC

Q:  The touch screen on my eo UMPC has stopped responding. The stick pointer and mouse click buttons still work. What should I do?

A:   First check that the power switch is in the middle position as the lower position lock the buttons and touch screen.

Power the unit down, remove the battery, and let the unit sit for at least minutes. Reinstall the battery power the unit up and test the touch screen.

    Printer Compatibility with eo UMPCs

Q:  What printers will work with my eo UMPC?

A:   The eo UMPCs are fully functioning Windows PCs, and therefore will support all standard USB and Bluetooth printers which are Windows compatible. As some printers may require that you install the appropriate printer drivers to properly function, please check your printer’s installation guide for instructions on how to accomplish this.

Outputting High Resolution Displays on eo UMPCs

Q:  I need to get my eo UMPC to display at a resolution of 1280x720. How can I do that?

A:   The native screen resolution of the eo UMPCs is 800x480. Using special software built in to the Touch Pack application suite that is preloaded on all eo UMPCs, and mapped to the screen resolution function button, Windows will interpolate a screen resolution of 800x600 and 1024x600 down to fit the eo’s native screen.

In order to run at another resolution you’ll need to connect an external monitor, capable of supporting your desired resolution, and configure it in the display settings to be a secondary display and not mirrored.

The eo i72DC docking station that comes bundled with the eo i7200 series UMPCs or the optional eo v7110 port replicator (as well as the soon to be released v7110 docking station) will allow an external monitor to be connected and used as a independent secondary display. The eo TufTab v7112XT has a VGA out connector built-in.

Restoring Your eo UMPC with the System Restore Disc(s)

Q:  How do I restore my eo UMPC using the system disc(s) that came with my computer?

A:   The job is quite simple provided that the partitions have not been removed from the drive.

Note: This is a destructive recovery procedure. All data will be lost on the drive. Read all the instructions through carefully before attempting this procedure.

    1. Plug in an external CD/DVD drive into one of the USB ports. Make sure the drive has external power if required.
    2. Boot the eo with the recovery DVD in the drive.
    3. When prompted to “Restore your partition now?” select OK.
    4. Depending on the speed of your drive it should take just under 15 minutes.
    5. When the unit restarts, eject the DVD or unplug the CD/DVD drive.

Your eo should now boot as if new. If not, you have probably modified or removed the partitions on the HDD. In order for the recovery to be successful, there has to be at least one primary active partition. If there isn’t, you’ll need to use FDISK or some other 3rd party disk utility to create a primary active partition and repeat steps 1-3.

Floating TIP (Tablet Input Panel) for eo UMPCs in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Q:  How do I get the Tablet Input Panel (TIP) to appear over text input fields on my eo UMPC like it does when I use my Sahara Slate PC?

A:   Windows XP Tablet PC Edition will only activate the pop-up TIP icon for accessing the user text input panels on PCs with an active digitizer pen due to a conflict with the TouchKit application that drives the touch screens on the UMPCs. There is, however, a freely downloadable utility called FloatTip that will re-enable that functionality.

You can download the application from here, unzip the floattip.exe file and place it in your startup folder. Restart your eo and you should find that the pop-up TIP now functions as intended.

    eo UMPC Software Compatibility

Q:  I am thinking about purchasing an eo UMPC as a mobile workstation for accessing our company’s e-mail and database on the road. Are the eo UMPCs compatible with programs such as Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Access like regular PCs?

A:   Since UMPCs run the full Windows XP operating system - and not a scaled down, feature limited version such as Windows Embedded or Windows Mobile - they will run most any Windows compatible application whose minimum hardware requirements they satisfy.

All of our eo UMPC models have touch screen interfaces that al
