Windows 7 is here!
The arrival of Windows 7 is a very exciting time for tablet PC owners. From the improvements to handwriting recognition and touch capabilities to the new features such as Tablet Math and Snipping, Windows 7 is sure to impress. Microsoft has made several improvements for people who like to go mouse and keyboard free.
Here is a summary of these features from the Microsoft Windows 7 website:
Handwriting Recognition
Handwriting Recognition has been made to run faster and more accurate with text prediction which attempts to come up with the words before you finish writing. Also a new personalized dictionary speeds up handwriting by having un-ordinary terms such as medical or technical terms stored. Windows 7 has created different options while writing such as splitting words, joining words, and crossing out words to erase them. It is also capable, with the right software, for handwriting recognition to support many more languages then it did before.

Tablet Math
Windows 7 has come out with a totally new feature called Tablet Math. Tablet Math is a program that works just like it sounds. The new math input panel is able to recognize handwritten math expressions. After the program recognizes the expression it can transfer it to a word processing or computational program so the problem isn't sloppy from handwriting it.
Flicks
As shown in the video at the top of the page, Windows 7 has updated the Flick application. Flicks are something that you cannot do with a mouse; you need either a tablet pen or your finger on a touch screen. To perform a Flick you do just that, make a flicking motion in a certain direction and Flick will perform the task you have assigned for that direction. For example, navigational flicks help you drag up or down on a screen or a play-list while flicking left or right will move you forward or back in your web browser or through pictures. The other type of Flicks are called editing Flicks. Editing Flicks use the diagonal directions to copy, paste, undo, and delete objects. The editing Flicks can also be customized for keyboard shortcuts like F5 or Ctrl+B.
Snipping
Another feature on the new Windows 7 is the Snipping feature. Snipping is used to capture and image on your screen whether it's on a website, an email, or a Windows Journal file. After Snipping an item it can be put in an email, for example important info off a spread sheet, an interesting headline, or an image. Also, after Snipping an image you can write on top of the captured image with the pen.
Tablet Buttons
With Windows 7 the tablet PC's buttons can be programmed to do more than one thing. If you click a button one time it will perform the task assigned to it. But a second function can be programmed to every button. By pressing and holding in the tablet button it will perform the second task assigned to that particular button.
For PC's with Touch Screen Capabilities
Improved DPI Support
The improved DPI support makes buttons, links, and other targets easier to access on a touch screen. The UI elements are rendered closer to their intended size, which usually makes them bigger. Windows 7 has also drawn short cuts and jump lists with extra vertical spacing in order to make them easier to select. It has also made things like play buttons bigger and easier to select. The only way a person can actually tell a difference between touch and not touch is because the show desktop button is twice as large as normal to make the button easier to touch.
Touch Typing
If you decide to type on the touch keyboard, Windows 7 has made it a little easier by making the letters glow each time they are touched so the person typing knows they are touching them. Also, Windows has added a multi-touch support for natural typing behaviors. Multi-touch support enables a person to type as quickly as they would on a normal keyboard. It helps with things like entering a URL address.
Multi-Touch Capabilities
If your touch screen has multi-touch capabilities Windows 7 has made several uses for it. First, if you press your finger on the screen and hold it, the right click menu will appear. Next, you can put two fingers at one point and slide them away from each other to zoom out, or slide them together to zoom in. This application can be used for zooming in or out on maps or photos. The Flick application applies the same for your finger as it did with your pen did while scrolling. Finally, if you touch two points on an image, you can rotate the image to any position.
