An interview with Gay Sperling, President and Founder, Wearable Vegetables

Technology has always been Gay Sperling’s secret ammunition for business.  Her business, which sells aprons, t-shirts and other items with trademarked word creations, does “big business for a small business” and she counts on technology to keep her on top of trends and research.

Then Hurricane Katrina happened.  As a born-and-bred New Orleans resident, Gay was devastated to see her business and hometown disappear overnight.  Gay’s company was underwater, including all the computers with all the information she needed.  Backups were not as recent as she would have liked, and it was going into the busiest part of the season.  Wearable Vegetables was able to restore their data thanks to a specialist in Wisconsin, but Gay never wanted to feel that way again.

“I was devastated I hadn’t purchased a tablet PC before Katrina,” she said.  “I would have had my information with me and saved a lot of time and aggravation.  I feel like I became a good example for a bad event.  My company made it out OK, but we needed to reinvent our computer systems.”

Gay had studied tablet PCs for more than three years.  She knew she wanted one, and was waiting for prices to drop. She was also confused with which tablet PC would work best for her business and lifestyle.

Gay is reaching her goal of going paperless, using her Tablet PC to jot down all her thoughts, notes and ideas.  “My tablet goes to me everywhere now.  It’s my best friend.  You never know when you will be inspired and need to write and I don’t want an idea to get lost in the black hole of my briefcase.”
