By JOHN WILEN
The Intelligencer
John Hill has built a $2.2 million business on a technology he came across by accident.
That technology — tablet computers — has been much-maligned in recent years, particularly in the wake of Bill Gates' 2001 prediction that tablet PCs would be the most popular kind of computer sold in the U.S. within five years. That prediction, of course, did not come to pass, though Gates recently said he stands by his belief that tablets are the way the industry will eventually go.
Hill founded his Horsham company, Allegiance Technology Partners, in July 2002 as a reseller and systems integrator. The concept is simple, and widespread: The company would buy, install and maintain computers, software and networks for companies. Systems integrators relieve companies of the headaches inherent in buying and setting up computer systems. Their customers know whom to call when things go wrong, or when they want to expand or make changes.
But something happened to Hill on the way to the systems integration ball: He came across a tablet computer at a trade show. “I fell in love,” Hill said. “And in order to support my habit, I had to change my whole business model.”
Allegiance is still a systems integrator, but its focus now is exclusively on tablet computers. The company buys the tablets, loads the software, customizes it for customers, teaches them how to use it and is available to help if anything goes wrong. Allegiance is developing a niche creating interactive forms for customers, and sees developing a stable of computer-based forms that can be customized quickly for companies in various industries as key to its future success.
Why the focus on forms? First, one must understand exactly how a tablet PC works. Tablets are kind of like laptops — without the keyboard. Their screens are touch-sensitive, and can be navigated by a pen-like stylus or finger. The screen itself looks like that of any computer desktop. Tablet PCs cost about $2,000, Hill said. Customized software can add another $1,000 to $1,500 to the cost. Most Allegiance tablets come loaded with Active Ink, a software program that lets users take notes right on the computer screen as if they were using pad of paper. Active Ink can convert the written notes into printed text, or not, as the user prefers. The notes can be saved as digital files and sent to other computers, stored and retrieved later. There's no reason the same type of software can't be loaded onto a laptop computer, but unlike tablets, laptops can't be carried around and used as easily as a pad of paper.
The Montgomery County Department of Health recently spent $60,000 to buy 23 tablets from Allegiance. The tablets will replace lengthy paper forms health department officials use when inspecting restaurants. “They're using the tablet because they're able to put the form on there,” said Harriet Morton, department spokeswoman. Of course, the form could also be loaded onto a laptop, but an inspector would have a much harder time walking around taking notes on a laptop, Morton said.
Allegiance specializes in converting a customer's paper forms into electronic forms that can be filled out by hand with a stylus or by selecting items from a drop-down menu. That's added value that Tony Nicotera, owner of National Safety Inspections, a Fleetwood, Berks County, automotive lift inspection company, could not find elsewhere. His inspectors walk around filling out forms. “You couldn't do that on a normal laptop,” Nicotera said.
While the initial promise of tablet PCs — which were launched in 2002 — has not been fulfilled, many companies are finding success selling them for niche users, said Ben Gray, an analyst with Forrester Research in Cambridge, Mass. In the case of Allegiance, the focus on forms is giving the company traction with customers. “It sounds like they're in sort of a sweet spot,” Gray said.
Allegiance started out selling only a couple of tablets a month, Hill said. It now sells 40 to 60 a month. And its customer base is not what Hill first expected. “I thought it was going to be field sales people,” Hill said. “But it turned out to be field service people.” Customers range from building inspectors to HVAC installation and repairmen. Hill sells globally. Market research firm In-Stat in 2005 predicted that tablet PC sales will rise from $1.2 billion in 2004 to $5.4 billion by 2005. Forrester's Gray is reluctant to make predictions about the tablet PC market, noting that most past predictions have been wrong — including that of Gates.
“He may be right, his timing might just have been off,” Gray said. But more than 50 percent of businesses of all sizes in recent Forrester surveys say they use tablet computers. And of those, nearly a quarter of large businesses, and about 10 percent of small businesses, plan to increase their use of tablets PCs, the surveys found.
While anybody can buy a tablet PC online or from a computer store, few companies customize tablets and offer the kind of training Allegiance does. “I couldn't find anybody else, quite honestly,” that would provide the support and training Allegiance does, Nicotera said. Hill considers laptop computers to be his competition. With four employees, Allegiance is looking to hire another sales person. Hill has funded the company himself until now, but is thinking about looking for angel investors. “We're thinking about it,” Hill said. “Because we would like to expand faster.”
